i have started backpacking!! haven't had much time to update anything...facebook photos included....on this trip i only have a small netbook so editing photos will have to wait till i get home. i will try and get a lighter version of photoshop(elements i guess?) for my laptop.

so far i have been to barcelona and madrid! tonight is my last night in madrid and then i on my way to lisbon, portugal tomorrow morning. an 9 hour bus! not looking forward to that at ALL. the pictures i have been taking are AMAZINGGGG. such beauty here! it is mind boggling. ever winding street is photogenic....every old couple that walks by ...i want to take their picture! it has been a wonderful trip so far ...i am meeting so many amazing people and i cannot wait for the rest of the next 2 months!

just spent about 4 hours sitting in the louvre writing and drafting photo ideas. what an inspiring place! it is by far my favourite place in paris thus far. i've seen most of the collection now...and will be taking my camera the next few times. super excited for the photos to come!

i'm going to try and make this update a bit more exciting. i am getting a tattoo here in paris! here is the rough design:

pretty snazzy eh? it is spanish for "for my heart" and is from a pinback song called "penelope". while i enjoy the original version...i fell in love with the saosin cover back in 2005. it's been my fav song ever since. listen listen listen:

check out the original too by pinback! i has a totally different feel to it.

IF you didn't know...this month is National November Writing Month. the goal? 50,000 words in 30 days. while i am taking part...i really doubt i will hit 50k....i will be happy if i get to 30k. what is interesting about this whole thing is that the contest promotes quantity over quality...and is really just a push to get you to write SOMETHING down. i have about 8k so far...i've been using a online program called "write or die"...you set a time limit(say 15 minutes) and word goal(500 words) and GO! if you stop typing for any length of time it actually starts beeping at you and the screen turns red. if you continue to not type is starts deleting(word by word!) your already typed work! needless to say it keeps you writing and i've been getting lots of work done on my book haha.

i will be making a post soon on my attempt at faking tilt shift photography. i've fallen in love with the way the photos turn out and thought i'd take a stab at the photoshop technique...rather then buy the 1200$ lens...with that 1200$ that i do not have haha. here is my first attempt:

i am going to be living in paris for about 4 months with my friends Morgan and Taylor. i arrive september 6th. i am super super excited about this trip! after paris we hope to do some backpacking around southern europe...maybe even head to asia! the photos that i will take are going to be AMAZING. i am so excited!!! i will be keeping a different type of blog from now on. a link and more info coming soon!

this is the guy who got me interested in photography. he is a musician under the alias "Tycho" and one day 5 or so years ago while listening to his music on his site i checked out his portfolio. he is the number one reason why fairfield, california is on my list of places to go in my life. i just want to see in person the places that he has photographed. check out his site, then click portfolio. http://iso50.com/iso50.html

i studied Gregory Crewdson in a course i took last year at RyChang and instantly fell in love with his work. his pictures usually have only one or two subjects and depict strange and sometimes sci-fi-esque situations. at first glance his photos appear normal, with cookie cutter suburban settings and regular looking people and objects(cars, mirrors, houses). but with every picture there is always a slight twist. a car parked in the middle of the street, an eerie spotlight shining down on a person, or a garden growing in the middle of a living room. what i appreciate most about his pictures is the EXTENSIVE planning and lighting of each shot. in essence he sets up a equivalent to a movie set in regular suburbs all across the USA. each light you see in the photo is in fact a studio light(street lamps, car headlights, lit rooms in houses etc.). the photo's i'm about to show do NOT do the pictures justice. i highly suggest if you like the work you see to go to your local library and look for his art books. the books, depending on the series, are usually about 3 feet wide and the detail is exquisite.

i need to update this blog more! i'm slacking.

i got accepted into humber college!! i'm really happy about this...even though i am going to paris next year it is good to know that i can come back next year and have a good chance to get into a school here in toronto. (but who knows where i'll be in a year!)

as for photography i've been so busy with work and applying to schools i've had little time to a lot of creative shoots. still though, i have done a few and here are my favs from them:

i've been debating it for awhile now but i think i'm going to do a bladerunner inspired photo shoot. fav movie of all time for sure. it's going to be hard to imitate the complex sets of the movie but i think china town at dusk should do the trick. that's all i'm going to say about that because i don't want to jinx it and end up not doing it haha. 4. on the horizon? working with a few people (an painter who wants some portraits for an gallery showing, an few small time advertisements, and a red glove series with my friend becky). finding time is proving to be a big issue as i usually work during the day and any usable daylight is always gone by the time i get out. borrowed a really nice flash unit from my friend ryan and i'm sure i'll be putting it to use soon!

this blog is kinda becoming a music blog...not really working on a lot of photography right now, but i hope to soon. that being said the band i'm praising this time is named "person l". kenny vasoli is taking a break from his band "the starting line" and writing songs that he feels truly describes who he is musically/emotionally. in person l he has complete creative reign and you can tell the difference by just listening to the two. don't get me wrong, the starting line is one of my top 20 bands but person l just takes it that much further....kenny vasoli is such a talent. please check out both bands!

the only song i like off of mae's ep "(m)orning". it makes up for the rest though, such a gorgeous song, wow! p.s. just because you've had moderate success DOESN'T mean you are allowed to make 9 min long songs about going for a drive to the beach and playing your guitar...just no. instrumentals on the ep are promising though!

i've been taking some time off photography to sort some other things out(sorry model mayhem models!). i have half a notebook of ideas ready to go and i add to it daily. i will pick the d300 up again in a week or so i'm hoping.

i recently met with the owner of Proof gallery in the distillery district. it went really well and i look forward to exhibiting some of my work there later this year! :)!

i will be updating more regularly in the days to come!

arrived in florida yesterday! it's so warm and sunny here, not to humid, just perfect. unfortunately i got news yesterday that i didn't get accepted to the ryerson photography program. needless to say i'm completely devastated and shot down. i worked SO hard on my portfolio and improving my photography in this past year that it really is hard to hear this news. i'm trying to tell myself that everything happens for a reason and maybe it was meant to be this way but it's hard when ryerson all i wanted/thought/talked about for the last 2 years or so.

that being said, i'm in florida right now and i can't let this ruin my vacation! more updates soon and florida pictures soon as well :). thanks for reading!

i've needed to buy a laptop for awhile now...thinking about going with the hp mini 10.1" inch model...really only need to for light internet use and word processing....though it would be cool to use it on shoots to preview shots as i take them...i'm going to head to tiger direct on the weekend to see whats up.

as for the video of the day(haha) i'm going to have to go with Simon Collins - "Unconditional". i dunno there is just something about that song that makes me happy even when i'm having a bad day(aka the last few days bleh). it raises my spirits for sure!

i leave for Florida in 7 days! i'm SOsososoSOOO excited. can't wait to take pictures of the beach and random old people. a friend of mine may come down to visit for a week but i won't jynx it by saying who. i'm ready for 3 weeks of nothing to worry about!!

absolutely loving new Calvin Harris. i feel he has come a long way from "i created disco", which was good, but lacking in compassion(in my opinion...minus traffic cops). his new single "I'm Not Alone" is just great and all the remixes by tiesto, herve and deadmau5 are even better!

The response to the site has been amazing! Over 500 visitors in the first day! I was amazed! Thanks for all the kind words and constant support!

Here is a vid that I found a few months ago...it won the 2005 Oscar for best short animation. The story is about Ryan Larkin, the canadian film animator(did a lot of great work for the national film board of canada). Larkin passed away from lung cancer in 2007. The film is really touching and the animation is so amazing, a really good watch for sure

my first post! just finished editing the logo above and am now down creating the Moira Ness Photography Blog!! soooOOOoooo excited for the launch of the actual site! i still have to get business cards made up and finish uploading the pictures to the gallery pages but it's all going to come together sooner then soon! hoping by the end of this week. since i am finished my night courses(waiting on those marks...they will basically determine if i get into ryerson or not...fingers crossed!!!) i now have all my spare time devoted to getting my site up and running.
